There no doubt that, for the most part, repression is and has been the most popular method to control sexual impulses among traditional abrahamic religious traditions. However, it's important not to make generaliztions about the pratice of religion and the diverse types of spiritual traditions found within various religions. First, in addition to repression, in both abrahamic and especially in Asian relgions (dharmic relgions in particular), practioners have used other techinques to both restrain sexual impulses and to understand them. One example of this is sublimation and transformation of sexual impulses into socially beneficial and spiritually/emotionally developed forms of behavior.
