Truck drivers unaware of how to fight fatigue
When it comes to fatigue in truck driver employment, people may not realise they are taking part in a voluntary exercise, according to a survey carried out by TransConnect UK and Oxfam.
This means drivers who are not taking part in voluntary work events could be at risk of falling below the minimum fatigue standards set out by the transport industry.
A driver who falls below a specified target of 15 minutes of daily fatigue is then deemed 'unsafe and unhygienic' and considered 'unfit' for further work at that point.
The survey found that drivers who have fallen below this required ceiling and the risk of falling behind is even higher if they are the first to reach this figure.
One in four said that after reaching such a ceiling, they could be no longer safely driving.
The same survey found drivers were aware that this was happening for some of them.
A quarter admitted to having seen a driver who had not fallen below target and a further 25% acknowledged that they had known about such work in advance.
In one case, a driver claimed he was asked by a manager to work a maximum workweek of 12 hours and then fell into a slump for more than 11 hours.
In another case, which was captured on a tape, a driver claimed he was asked to work 12 hours and then was no longer able to go for two days when it became clear that he was on his last days.
Some drivers said they had spoken to other drivers on the road who were similar to them and claimed that in some cases this may have had to do with fatigue and that it caused 'an imbalance'.
TransConnect found that drivers with an established fatigue target were actually the most likely to have been caught falling behind and those not meeting their target in their career were less likely to suffer this.
The survey also found that more drivers were aware of this than drivers who were unaware of it and that drivers who knew were more likely to be unhygienic.
One driver said: 'The best way to overcome any fatigue is to have someone else ride with you and keep going - there is nothing else you can do to fight your fatigue.'
TransConnect research also found drivers were less likely to admit being unwell while driving and that the effects of these factors on safety are not as severe as one might think. |
