Former Labor Premier Jim Doyle has resigned from office with immediate effect following speculation he was behind a leak of secret state documents on the death penalty.
The document included the recommendation of a national commission on the execution of people with an IQ lower than 85.
The document was leaked to News Corp newspaper on Wednesday, before Mr Doyle took his seat as Premier, just three weeks ahead of a crucial meeting on capital punishment in October.
The former treasurer's resignation will raise concerns about his ability to oversee a government with so many people in charge, including the Prime Minister.
Mr Doyle announced the resignation on Wednesday at a press conference held in response to questions from journalists about the leak.
"I was elected with the intention of continuing the political culture that has been introduced to this place," he said.
"I've been given the opportunity to undertake the task I was asked to do by these people in these circumstances, and I accept my responsibility for the leak and the failure to respond to it."
The Premier said Mr Doyle's behaviour would not help him in any way.
"When you become Premier of the state, you have to live the way that you came to be," he said.
"This was a process that wasn't good enough from the outset. I look back now with great regret and regret that this was the outcome."
